Now that I’ve finished DD and only have to post the epilogue, I was looking back over it last night. I think that anyone who writes fanfic (or original fic, for that matter) has certain parts of a story or certain chapters that they like particularly well.
In DD, I have to say that my favorite chapter is Chapter Twenty-Nine: They shall rise again. I like the way the pacing and the perspectives worked in that one — and, of course, I spent a lot of time on it.
I think my second favorite chapter is the one in which Gareth bursts onto the scene, Chapter Thirteen: And the west moon. I thought it showed a lot of Severus’s growth, too.
Then my third favorite chapter would have to be Chapter Twenty-Eight: Though they sink through the sea. Hermione comes into her own in that chapter, for one, but I also liked the lighter moments in the chapter. And of course, as much as I like snakes (though I do respect them, especially their venom!), it was good to see Hermione destroy Nagini.
And here’s a little Nagini.

And the epilogue will be up very soon, unless lightning strikes me! heh!
I spotted this post while I was eating lunch. Seeing the list of your three favorite chapters sent me to go and look at them. Going back to chapter thirteen started me rereading the chapters that followed.
I’m rediscovering things that I liked before. I’m noticing things that I missed. This story can still make me tear up and few can do that.
Some of my favorites:
Gareth’s knife against Severus’ face.
Albus’ faith in Minerva
Albus’ waivering faith, when he is so ill.
Severus’ waivering prickliness when Gareth is trying to help him.
Severus’ denial that he is jealous of men that Hermione pays attention to.
My favorite line in the whole story:
“I’m off to die for the cause”, as Gareth jauntily goes off to allow Hermione to experiment on him. That’s when I fell utterly in love.
I’m going back to reading. I know you’ve posted the epilogue, but I’m not there yet.
This gave me quite a happy smile. Thank you!
I think that sometimes, we notice certain things more on rereading after we have a new perspective on the events and the characters.
I’m very glad you fell in love with Gareth. He likes you, too. 😉
Thanks for letting me know the bits that particularly struck you.
