I have posted a new one-shot to the Petulant Poetess, “The Fifth Gryffindor.”
We always hear about Potter, Black, Lupin, and Pettigrew, but there was a fifth Gryffindor in their dormitory room.
Characters: James Potter, Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, Peter Pettigrew, Severus Snape, Edward Burton
Rated M (to avoid spam)
This concept probably could have been worked into a longer, more involved story, but this is the way this particular character would tell it—and I also don’t think I could stomach writing in the first-person from this character’s p.o.v. for a novel-length fic. He’s got issues, shall we say!
I conceived of this character one day several months ago while writing “Stray,” the fifth Gryffindor, who survived the others, visits a cemetery and reflects on the other four. But what sort of character would this be? We never hear of him, and that’s when Burton began to grow in my mind, his sneaking, his eavesdropping, his non-involvement and his vicarious living. Not an evil character, but one who is nonetheless unsympathetic, even when he tells his own story. I could say more, but I hope that the story—and Burton—speaks for itself.
