All of the stories for the HP Friendship Fic Fest have been posted now. The author reveal will be in about a week. In the meantime, hop over to the site and peruse the fics.
Here’s the master list of stories, including week four.
I’ll be adding a few more of these fics to my rec list.
If you’re looking for something a bit different to read this week, I highly recommend “Before Peace,” an entry in the HP Friendship Fest. As soon as the Fest folk have done the “reveal,” I’ll add a note to this post with the author’s name.
“Before Peace” is a beautifully written, thoughtful piece. In a way, it’s a character study, and as such, it shows us characters who are in an extreme environment and who show their true mettle. It’s a very Ravenclaw fic, focussed on Ravenclaw characters, clever, thoughtful, and thought-provoking. I am really looking forward to learning who the author is.
Here is the blurb from the LJ entry for the fic:
Prompt/Prompt Author: He talks about the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising like it’s more magical than Hogwarts, and she listens because she wants to believe they’ll make it out of this alive. / liliths_requiem
Title: Before Peace
Characters: Padma, Anthony, Luna, Terry, Michael
Warnings: Canon violence*
Word Count: 4,900
Summary: “In this century…the poet is often the committed revolutionary intoxicated with the struggle for freedom.” A ghazal, and a story, from deep within the halls of Hogwarts.
*Note: the canon violence is oblique rather than explicit.
I will likely rec a few other fics from the Friendship Fest eventually, but I wanted to be sure to rec this one while it was fresh and before I could forget.
I submitted a few prompts for the HP Friendship Fest, and one of them was selected by an author. The result was posted today over on the HP Friendship LJ community: “Sybill Trelawney and the Unexpected Gift.”
Here’s the prompt for it:
After being sacked, Sybill turns to drink again. Minerva intervenes. Can be either a hopeful fic or more ambiguous.
And here’s the author’s summary:
Sybill Trelawney learns to live with her Inner Eye, cooking sherry, and Minerva McGonagall, in that order.
The author made very good use of the prompt, and did an excellent job of weaving canon scenes seamlessly into the fic. I thought it was a really touching look at Sybill, and also at Minerva.
I look forward to the reveal and learning who the author was.
New Chapter posted to A Long Vernal Season on both An Archive of Our Own and the Petulant Poetess.
Severus and Poppy find a peaceful haven in Chapter 117: “From the Primrose Cottage to the Shell Folly.”
A Long Vernal Season on the Petulant Poetess.
The Petulant Poetess has an on-going “Author Spotlight” feature this summer on their LJ. This week, they posted one with me.
Also of interest this week, the HP Friendship Fic Fest began posting. Here’s the week’s catch-up post. I thought that “Take to the Heather” was particularly well done. Take a look and see if any catch your fancy!
I’m adding a new recommendation to my fanfic recs page. This one features Minerva McGonagall and Severus Snape, who are facing a difficult Year 7 with Death Eaters in the school, Voldemort gaining power in the wizarding world, and open battle looming in the future. But they also have some ordinary Hogwarts business to take care of—and in the shadow of the Dark Lord, which presents some potential problems—and some personal issues between them, including the killing of Albus Dumbledore the previous spring.
I really enjoyed “Gin a Body Meet a Body.” There was tension, doubt, empathy, and tenderness, all beautifully played out without any false notes or over-writing. Both Minerva and Severus remained in character. Severus was of the sort of in-character interpretation that I prefer, rather than as relatively flat as he sometimes appears even in canon, where we are so often tantalized with a rich array possibilities for his character, his personality—his soul, as it were—which then dissolve into just a few single notes. Squibstress takes those possibilities and creates a rich character.
If you’ve never considered a Minerva/Severus fic, but are open to try one, I’d definitely recommend this. If you already enjoy the pairing, I’d say this is a “must-read.”
